Reading

In returning and rest is your salvation.

In quietness and trust is your strength.

—Isaiah 30 (OT)

Quiet

As your day begins, spend a few moments in silence and stillness.

Commentary

There are some people who are action-oriented. If they finish all of their work during the day and have a few free hours at night, they say, “I can’t get to sleep, so I’ll just stay up and do some work on the computer.”

It is wonderful to have abundant energy, for then no obstacle is too big to overcome. But there can be danger when we have more energy than we know what to do with. We feel we have to act. We just cannot be idle. We get involved in activities and relationships out of restlessness.

It is not enough if we just keep busy. The question is, what are we busy about? This is a very useful question. To know when to plunge into an activity and when to refrain from it requires judgment – detachment and discrimination. (WLB)
